Details for "Clery Act: How to Survive an Audit"

Overview: The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act requires that institutions of higher education go “on the record” regarding their campus security policies and statistics that reflect the occurrence of a wide range of criminal incidents. Changes to the Clery Act are coming down the pipeline, but even meeting the existing reporting standards can prove to be challenging. Is your campus currently doing all that it can in the most effective manner to measure up to the rigors of an audit? Failure to comply can put your university at risk of costly penalties and a tarnished image.

Who would benefit
Anyone who contributes to or oversees the reporting and maintenance of records pertaining to security on campus.

Program agenda:

  • Disclosing Crime and Security Policy Information: a review of the Clery Act requirements
  • Managing Crime Data on Campus: avoiding common mistakes
  • Preparing for a compliance audit
  • Changes to the Clery Act: What will they mean for your school
  • Q&A – What are the challenges on your campus?

Speaker Doug Tuttle

Doug Tuttle currently serves on the faculty of the University of Delaware’s School of Urban Affairs & Public Policy, teaching in the MPA degree program and coordinating the professional development training offered through the Academy for Excellence in Local Government Leadership. Doug also is currently serving his second term as a member of the Newark, Delaware City Council. In that capacity, he serves as a member of the steering committee of the National League of Cities’ University Communities Council, addressing the problems and opportunities of town-gown relationships.

Doug received both his BA and MPA degrees from the University of Delaware, and is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the National Crime Prevention Institute. He served for 25 years with the UD Department of Public Safety – the last 12 of those years as its director, during which he was elected to the offices of Regional Director and President of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators [IACLEA] and testified twice before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education concerning campus security legislation. An acknowledged authority on the Jeanne Clery Act, Doug served as an outside reviewer of the U.S. Department of Education’s Handbook for Campus Crime Reporting and continues to advance the compliance status of the nation’s colleges and universities through frequent lectures and web conferences.
